The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas Machado de Assis

Despite Rabassa having translated two of de Assis' earlier books, The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas and Quincus Borba, the English-speaking world still doesn't know enough about de Assis. When we first started Open Letter, Machado de Assis's Epitaph of a Small Winner (aka, The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas)was one of the first books we tried to get the rights to. While reading Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas) by Machado de Assis (1839-1908), I constantly had to remind myself that it was written in 1881. Machado de Assis must have loved his character Quincas Borba so much in The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas that he wrote another book centered on the, um, philosopher. The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. In his “new style” was Epitaph of a Small Winner, known in the new Gregory Rabassa translation as The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (a literal translation of the original title, Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas). I love that the books are organized by country, since I enjoy world literature. Of Love & Hunger by Julian Maclaren-Ross. The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas by Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. Remembering Babylon by David Malouf. And I've just put "Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas" on my to-buy-list for the next pay day!
